Sanath Jayasuriya (152) and Upul Tharanga (109) led Sri Lanka to a thumping eight-wicket win in the final one-dayer against England at Headingley for a 5-0 whitewashes.
The duo set a new record opening partnership for one-day internationals as their 286-run stand steered Sri Lanka to a convincing win with more than 12 overs to spare, as they chased down 322.
The series was won a week ago but the Sri Lankans were clearly intent on closing out the series in a clinical manner rather than sitting back in what was effectively a dead match.
Man of the match Jayasuriya made a 72-ball hundred and celebrated with the same childlike enthusiasm as he always has done. The mayhem began from the second ball of Sri Lanka's reply, as Kabir Ali darted one down the legside for four leg-byes.
Jayasuriya’s entertaining, big-hitting antics are well known to world cricket, though Tharanga is a newcomer –but has still dominated the England bowling without fear.
He took particular liking to rookie seamer Liam Plunkett, crashing him for two fours and then flicking a wide ball for a stunning six. Trailing Jayasuriya slightly, Tharanga joined his senior partner to bring up his second century of the series.
It was comforting for Sri Lankan to see that although Jayasuriya may be closing in on the twilight of his career, there is a ready-made replacement learning at his side.
