Profile: An elegant opening batsman who had made six one-day centuries by the time he had playd just 31 internationals. Sadly, the fact he did not manage another one in his next 38 games demonstrated a talented young talent but one who still had much to learn. At Headingley in 2006, on a tour in which two of his centuries helped Sri Lanka to a thumpng 5-0 one-day series victory over England, he scored 109 and put on a world record opening stand of 286 with his fellow left-handed opener Sanath Jayasuriya. He scored 165 and 71 not out against Bangladesh in his third Test at Bogra but was not able to maintain that form. Most pundits, though, agree he still has an exciting future and should be the ready-made replacement, long-term, for Jayasuriya in both formats of the game. On a personal level, his family home in the fishing village of Ambalangoda on the west coast, was washed away by the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004.
